I am a Ph.D. candidate with a Women’s and Gender Studies certificate in Stony Brook University’s Cultural Analysis and Theory program. My book chapters appear in The Western in the Global South and Race, Gender, and Sexuality in Post-Apocalyptic TV and Film. I have also published and edited for Cinephile, and have written reviews for Journal of Visual Culture and InVisible Culture.
My research investigates everyday engagements with media inside the home entertainment zone, with a close focus on handheld peripherals. I explore the history of the home entertainment zone as a training ground for media literacy and digital apperception. This zone is an historically shifting, temporary coherence of objects, services, habits, and practices. Using a mixed-methods approach of design and business history, media archaeology, and new materialism, I outline the shifting apparatus that iteratively subjectifies users. Other research areas I pursue are remediation in videogames & machinima and white masculine subject formation in American film and television. Apart from my dissertation which you can read about here, I am currently preparing a case-study on Logitech for submission to Design and Culture. Logitech takes pride in its expertise for refining the ‘last inch’ of interface between human and machine. This article argues that the increasing convergence in form and function of RCDs, gamepads, and mice does not stem from anything inherent in their technologies, but rather from a process of product development that issues from the company’s brand, design philosophy, departmental infrastructure, and inter-departmental communication and coordination. |
